NASHVILLE—Tennessee Republicans unveiled a new congressional map Wednesday that slices Memphis and its majority-Black Shelby County into three jagged districts, each carefully engineered to render Democratic votes irrelevant.

The proposal, expected to sail through the GOP supermajority before anyone can say “racial gerrymander,” arrives one week after the Supreme Court raised the bar for proving racism in redistricting. Party officials called the timing coincidental.

Civil rights leaders likened it to Jim Crow tactics, updated with Excel spreadsheets and President Trump’s enthusiastic endorsement. Democrats objected, then sat down, aware their input now carried the legal weight of a discarded Post-it note.

“This is what leadership looks like,” said Sen. Marsha Blackburn.

At press time, the average Tennessee voter remained convinced the state’s real problem was the price of gas, unaware their system of representation had just been fed through an industrial shredder.
